Woven Textiles as Brand Products: Designing a Brand Product Range for Metropolia University of Applied Sciences

The design challenge of this thesis was to design a threepiece brand product range for Metropolia University of Applied Sciences’ Degree Programme in Design.

The task was to make use of woven fabric, to find a producer for the products and to design packaging for them, as well as to produce prototypes and to estimate the products’ pricing. This thesis also looks into Metropolia’s existing brand products, investigates the Design programme’s wishes and expectations for the product range as well as examines the brand products’ uses within the university.

For this thesis data was gathered in different ways: by interviewing Metropolia’s personnel, by searching for possible producers online and at an international trade fair, and by executing a SWOT analysis of potential producers.

On the basis of the information gathered, three brand products were designed: a kitchen towel and a dish towel to be woven on a jacquard loom, and a woollen blanket to be woven on a 16-shaft dobby loom. In addition to each product’s pattern, the weaves which would be used to weave the fabric were also designed. Finally, labels, loops and packaging were created for the three products.
