TIG welding torch

“My thesis aims to update the traditional ergonomic and technical features of a TIG welding machine, and improving the usability with the help of product design means. My project concentrates in re-designing the handle of the welding machine, as well as taking a look at the material textures and their meaning.

My project is based on my personal real-life discoveries, as I have years of work experience as a welder. While working I found faults in ergonomy and usability of the device.

The features of the welding handle concept include e.g. ergonomic design that fits for different sized hands, distinctive appearance, and a digital display showing essential information for welding, such as the temperature and power of the welding tip, which are also adjustable through the display.

In addition to the concept I produced some 3D printed models of the welding handle, and used them when creating a plan for a user test for professionals of the field.”
