With friends, Phenomenon based learning workshop for Hietakumpu primary school

This thesis is about phenomenon based learning with pattern design and design education. The whole creative project has been implemented with Hietakumpu primary school in cooperation with students of class 4A, their teacher and another textile design student Kaisu Viitala. The subjects in this thesis are very current, as phenomenon based learning has been taken to use in many schools in Helsinki. Design education is also bringing new opportunities in problem solving to primary schools. The core in this pattern design workshop is to produce patterns that will be implemented with different techniques and styles. The workshop is built around the theme of friendship. It can be constructed in many different ways and in this thesis is made by the means of art. In this thesis the precept is based in the curriculum.

The purpose of this project is to get the students in class 4A to understand what it means to learn about design education through phenomenon based learning and realize how to work and design in teams. In the end of the workshop they can see the real product that has been made from their own ideas. This thesis focuses on the pattern design workshop, different techniques, phenomenon based learning, design education and working in teams. The result of the workshops will be refined into acoustics panels to Hietakumpu primary school. The panels will reduce noise and make the atmosphere more pleasant in the lunchroom. The pattern collection made in the workshop will be used in the panels. The acoustics panel planning will be done by textile student Kaisu Viitala.

This whole project has been implemented by two textile design students. The first thesis concerning this project is about the workshop and the other is about the acoustic plan concerning the Hietakumpu primary school lunchroom. Together they form a substantial innovative entity. The entire project will be made using multi-professional cooperation.
